The Fifth World began when two streams in my life crossed: the first, an excited conversation with my brother, inspired by the Open Game License, about what we might achieve if we combined an open source roleplaying game with an open source setting; the second, the inspiration I took from Michael Green's Afterculture. It took my wife Giuli to help me realize how easily these two fit together. I spent many years in pursuit of a seemingly impossible dream: to craft a context within a game that would draw an animist experience out of a person, even if that person never suspected such a thing might lie inside her. I still might not believe such a thing possible, had I not seen it happen so many times.
